Overview:
The Director, Preconstruction Engineering will champion the identification, prioritization and successful achievement of the preconstruction design and engineering requirements to support a growing pipeline of community solar PV and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects across the U.S. This senior-level role works closely with the Director, Engineering to monitor the execution of all technical activities during the preconstruction phase, including conceptual and preliminary design, feasibility and interconnection analysis, cost estimation, risk assessment, and design optimization. This role is the senior leader coordinating between the development team and the EPC group and is responsible ensuring the successful provision of engineering services related to portfolio development. The position will report to the Senior Director Engineering and Utility Engagement working in close coordination with the development team.
This leader will collaborate closely with development, engineering, procurement, construction, and finance teams to ensure technically sound, economically optimized, and execution-ready project designs. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise, proven leadership experience, and a track record of success in renewable energy project development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead a high-performing preconstruction engineering function responsible for technical project development from early-stage through notice-to-proceed (NTP).
- Maintain a pipeline of upcoming engineering work required by the development team and work with the Director, Engineering to ensure adequate and appropriate internal and 3rd party resourcing.
- Ensure the engineering team’s priorities are in alignment with desired business outcomes, and are effectively established and articulated.
- Monitor and track technology trends that could impact engineering services.
- Drive standardization, quality control, and innovation in design and engineering processes for solar PV and energy storage projects.
- Facilitate optimization of engineered designs that balance civil, electrical, operational and commercial requirements.
- Maintain a technology roadmap of standard equipment (modules, inverters, transformers, racking) to be used in designs.
- Assist the EPC team in the preparation and issuance of project scope of works, RFPs, schedules, budgets and cash flow projections.
- Facilitate continuous improvement by providing feedback to the development teams from lessons learned on construction and operational issues.
- Oversee feasibility studies, develop conceptual layouts, preliminary system design, interconnection strategy, site assessments, and provide permitting support.
- Ensure alignment between engineering solutions and commercial objectives, including energy yield, CAPEX, OPEX, and LCOE optimization.
- Coordinate closely with procurement to inform equipment selection and ensure compatibility with design and performance goals.
- Collaborate with construction and EPC partners to ensure constructability, value engineering, and seamless handoff from development to execution.
- Monitor the quality of engineering deliverables including system layouts, SLDs, energy models, and performance guarantees and work with the Director, Engineering to identify and implement necessary improvements.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate project technical risks across the individual projects and broader portfolio.
- Represent the company in key technical discussions with investors, partners, and regulatory agencies.
- Attend development meetings and engineering meetings to know project status, schedules, issues.
- Manage external consultants for permit designs, in close collaboration with engineering, development and permitting resources internally.
- Ensure transfer and controls of data from permit packages to IFC plans.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, or related field with a Professional Engineering (PE) license; Master’s degree preferred.
- 10+ years of experience in engineering and technical leadership roles within the solar PV with a preference for a candidate with energy storage industry design and construction experience.
- Demonstrated experience coordinating with multidisciplinary engineering teams in a fast-paced project development environment.
- Deep understanding of solar and storage technologies, electrical design, permitting, interconnection processes, and utility/grid integration.
- Background in developing projects, advancing them through permitting and interconnection with a commercial understanding of the financial aspects of project development.
- Proficient with PVsyst, AutoCAD, Helioscope, Blue Beam and other relevant engineering and modeling tools.
- Strong understanding of NEC, IEEE, ASCE, and applicable state/federal energy regulations.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously while maintaining a high level of technical rigor and attention to detail.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred:
- PMP certification.
- Experience working for or with an Independent Power Producer (IPP), utility, or energy asset owner.
- Knowledge of SCADA, EMS, and energy storage control systems.
- Familiarity with long-term asset ownership and performance optimization strategies.
Salary:
Salary: $160,000 - $180,000 USD
Bonus Opportunity: 35% of annual base salary
