Shutesbury, MA – 3 Sept 2025 – PureSky Energy (“PureSky”), a leading developer and operator of community solar and battery storage projects across the U.S., today announced that it will be pausing further development of five proposed clean energy projects near Shutesbury, Massachusetts.
PureSky Energy remains committed to supporting Massachusetts’ clean energy future. Over the past several years, the company has worked diligently to find a feasible path to deliver clean energy and savings to the local community near Shutesbury. Despite those efforts, broader policy and regulatory headwinds facing the Commonwealth’s solar sector have made further development of these sites challenging at this time.
While the Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) program, the state’s primary incentive mechanism, has supported the buildout of solar across the state, its declining rate model has not kept pace with rising costs for land, interconnection and equipment. Coupled with federal policy updates, these headwinds are making it harder to finance projects like those proposed near Shutesbury.
“There are very few areas in the Commonwealth that are feasible to reach its clean energy goals” said Derek Moretz, VP Development of PureSky Energy. “We respect the Town’s conservation goals, but it is clear that systemic reforms are needed for Massachusetts to source its own energy.”
PureSky is refocusing its resources toward communities across Massachusetts that are eager to support renewable energy infrastructure and share in the benefits of clean, reliable, and affordable power. The company continues to advance a strong pipeline of solar and battery storage projects throughout the Commonwealth and across the United States, supporting state climate goals and delivering savings to local businesses, schools and households, including low- and moderate-income families.
PureSky Energy is a leading developer, owner, and operator of US community solar, C&I and storage projects with headquarters in Denver, Colorado. Since entering the Massachusetts market, the company has expanded its capacity and currently operates a portfolio with generation capacity of approximately 56 MW across 12 sites and battery energy storage systems of approximately 31 MWh. The company’s mission is to make clean energy accessible and affordable to local communities across the United States, while shaping a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come.
