Community Solar Options in New York: What’s Available?

As New York leads the charge toward a clean energy future, community solar is helping residents across the state save money and reduce their carbon footprint—without needing to install panels on their roofs.

Whether you live in a Buffalo suburb, a Hudson Valley town, or a rural area upstate, community solar makes it possible to enjoy the benefits of renewable energy with no upfront cost, no maintenance, and no equipment required.

At PureSky Energy, we're proud to be part of New York’s clean energy transformation. With several active solar farms across the state, including Grand Island, Black Water, and Quiet Meadows 1 & 2, we’re making it easier than ever to subscribe to solar power and start seeing real savings on your electricity bill.

What Is Community Solar?

Community solar is a shared renewable energy model that allows individuals, families, and businesses to subscribe to a portion of a local solar farm. As the solar farm generates electricity, subscribers earn bill credits based on their share of the energy produced, helping them save money while supporting clean power in their communities.

✅ No rooftop installation
✅ No maintenance or equipment costs
✅ Guaranteed savings (typically around 10%)
✅ Available to homeowners, renters, and small businesses

If you pay your own utility bill, you’re likely eligible to subscribe.

Where Are PureSky’s Projects in New York?

We’re currently serving customers in several regions of New York State through our expanding network of solar farms. Our projects are designed to bring reliable savings and local environmental benefits to the communities they serve.

Grand Island Solar (Erie County)

Located just outside Buffalo, our Grand Island solar farm provides clean, renewable energy to residents in the National Grid utility territory. It’s an ideal choice for Western New Yorkers looking to lower their utility costs while supporting energy independence.

Black Water Solar (Niagara County)

The Black Water project helps bring affordable solar energy to homes and small businesses in the Niagara Falls region. It's part of our mission to deliver solar access to communities across upstate and western New York.

Quiet Meadows 1 & 2 (Orleans County)

These twin projects—Quiet Meadows 1 and Quiet Meadows 2—are delivering clean energy to rural residents in Orleans County and surrounding areas. With their combined capacity, these solar farms are helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut energy costs for hundreds of New Yorkers.

Types of Community Solar Available in New York

New York is a national leader in community solar, with dozens of solar sites operating or in development across the state. Here are the main types of options available to residents and businesses:

Open Enrollment Subscription Community Solar

These are the most common and accessible. You subscribe to a solar farm that’s currently accepting new customers. Most programs (including PureSky’s) offer:

  • A guaranteed discount on the value of your solar credits—often around 10%
  • No cancellation fees
  • Flexible monthly billing
  • Eligibility for renters, homeowners, and small businesses
  • PureSky’s projects, including Grand Island, Black Water, and Quiet Meadows, fall into this category.

These community solar farms are ideal if you want a no-commitment, easy way to save on electricity without equipment or upfront cost.

Solar for All (Low-Income Eligible Program)

Managed by NYSERDA, the Solar for All program provides free community solar subscriptions to income-eligible households. These participants receive the same bill credits as regular subscribers—without paying anything for them.

Requirements:

  • You must meet income guidelines (e.g., qualify for HEAP, SNAP, or other assistance programs)
  • Your utility must support community solar
  • Solar sites must have availability

While these spots are limited, they offer an amazing opportunity to access solar benefits at zero cost. PureSky supports Solar for All efforts through selected partnerships when capacity is available.

Large-Scale or Anchor Tenant Subscriptions

For large consumers of electricity—like schools, municipalities, or businesses—many solar farms offer larger subscription shares through "anchor tenant" programs. These options may include:

  • Longer-term agreements
  • Customized credit allocations
  • Greater total dollar savings

If you're managing a high-volume account, PureSky can work with you directly to structure a custom solution.

Where Are These Community Solar Farms Located?

Community solar farms are spread throughout the state, typically located in an ideal place for generating electricity from the sun. You can use tools like the NYSERDA Community Solar Map or view our list of community solar farms below to see what's available in your area by ZIP code and utility provider.

Choosing the Right Option: What to Consider

Not all community solar programs are the same. When comparing your options, ask these key questions:

  • What’s the guaranteed discount rate? (With PureSky, it’s typically 10%)
  • Is there a contract term or early cancellation fee? (PureSky offers flexible, no-penalty plans)
  • How is billing handled? (Some providers require separate invoices; PureSky simplifies this with easy-to-follow statements)
  • Is there a credit check? (PureSky’s standard plans don’t require one for most subscribers)

Also, consider the reputation of the provider. Look for companies that are NYSERDA-approved, offer strong customer service, and provide clear, honest information—like PureSky Energy.

Why Choose PureSky Energy?

At PureSky, we believe that clean energy should be simple, accessible, and beneficial for everyone. Here’s what sets us apart:

  • Guaranteed 10% savings on your solar credits
  • No fees, no long-term commitments, and no credit checks for most subscribers
  • Friendly customer support and straightforward billing
  • Trusted, NYSERDA-approved provider with projects across the state

Whether you’re enrolling in Grand Island, Black Water, Quiet Meadows, or another site, you can count on transparent service, reliable performance, and real savings.

Don’t Wait—Capacity Is Limited

As New York works to meet its goal of generating 70% of electricity from renewables by 2030, community solar is growing rapidly—but so is demand. Once a project reaches full capacity, enrollment closes.

If you see an open spot in Grand Island, Black Water, or Quiet Meadows, now’s the time to lock in your savings and join the clean energy movement.
